Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
