Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to challenge particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
